Ocons side or Verstappen? i think that yes, Ocon is allowed to unlap himself but why would you want to unlap yourself if you are two laps down? i wo uld just try and bring the car home at that point

While imo Max didn’t do anything wrong, he should have just let Ocon let go, no point in messing about with a backmarker when you have such a comfortable lead

Ocon was wrong first, Max was wrong most. Basically, Ocon did something a little bit stupid and Max compounded it by doing something monumentally stupid.

Right now if I had to pick a driver to win one race, I’d pick Max. He’s super quick, aggressive, and if he can win the race he’s going to do absolutely everything to win it. But under no circumstances would I want to rely on him in a championship, he’s just not capable of taking a long view of racing yet.

They both tried to out stupid each other, and they both won stupid prizes. Ocon was clearly along side him at turn in for 2 , which entitled him to racing room. Pulling that move, at that spot, on the leader, when you’re a lap down was poor judgment to say the least.

Max didn’t leave racing room. Tangling that hard, in that spot, with a back marker who has less to lose than you do when you’ve got a 4 second lead and know you are in a superior strategic position to Lewis is monumentally stupid. Lewis had the right take on this.

Starting a shoving match in the paddock is doubling down on the stupid. I would’ve thrown the book at him for that. He’d watching the last race from home and be on double secret probation for the foreseeable future.

If it was racing for the win, fair game to drive that hard but Ocon still would have gotten a penalty for avoidable contact. Racing that hard just to get your lap back makes Ocon an asshole. Max probably should have given more space but Ocon should have backed out after T1 and not forced his nose in there. Max went for the apex because there was no reason for Ocon to force the issue like that and thus Max would not have expected him to be there.

I honestly think Verstappen could not see him because Ocon just all of a sudden dived up the inside of T2 when he was behind him. Verstappen was running the racing line so I don’t think he is at fault

I don’t think Max couldn’t see him; I think he didn’t bother to look because he wasn’t anticipating Ocon to fight him that hard. . If you look at the replay, Ocon held the outside all the way around turn 1 and stayed there into 2. He never dove up the inside because he was already there.

Should Ocon have been righting Verstappen there? No, there was little to gain. But by the regulations he had the right to fight Verstappen to unlap himself, and the latter picture is of a gap that is 2-3 times the size of gaps that Verstappen has gone for.

Ocon was overly aggressive, but Verstappen just completely zoned out.

A lot of people are suggesting that Ocon should have gotten a penalty for that move even if it was for position, and lord alive that’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard.

Verstappen in the wrong, absolutely no question.

Yes, he had the faster car. That’s no excuse for not yielding to Ocon, who had the line and the commit. Verstappen didn’t have the commit, period. He came off his line for absolutely no reason other than ego. Not only that, but there is no claim that Ocon wasn’t racing for position. Verstappen was the leader, therefore, he was in a position to defend against lapping. Racing to not go a lap down is racing for position .

Ocon might have a shit car, but he was entirely and completely in the right here. He was the professional racer in every way here. At no point did he interfere with Verstappen’s line, deliberately block, or cut. His “wtf? He hit me” reaction isn’t even eyebrow raising; Max could have passed on the outside line FFS.

Just because he’s a backmarker car doesn’t mean he isn’t entitled or obligated to race as hard as he can for position. And the fact is that Ocon raced clean and hard. He had the pace through the turn. The penalty assessed against Ocon is complete bullshit, but everyone wants it to be him, because he’s a backmarker. Fuck that shit. Ocon was fighting to unlap himself, he had a clean line, Verstappen’s line was shit, Max pulled into his line without looking. Avoidable contact was Max’s fault, not Ocon’s. And I don’t need to point out who spent the whole time blaming the other guy and then went and tried to start a fight.

Verstappen needs to grow the fuck up.

Outside T1 - inside T2 is a perfectly valid move (check the video) , and there’s nowhere Ocon could’ve gone once he made the boneheaded decision to attempt the pass.

I also don’t get the “didn’t expect him to be there” argument. Those mirrors serve a purpose and on top of that Ocon nudged his car’s nose past Verstappen’s at turn-in of T1. I choose to believe Verstappen made the conscious decision to try and force something (out of habit?), rather than his spatial awareness being this bad (though that would explain some of his other moves before maturing a bit halfway this season).

Both of them acted like idiots, but by taking it off the track into the garage, Verstappen out-idioted Ocon imo (and Ocon out-Verstappened Verstappen on track) .
